Yes you can start with sword and shield. There is no reason to play other game before, unless you want to get prepared and experience the game before the new gen launch. They are all great games! The best game objectively is Let's GO. May provide less features, but everything is polished and made with lots of love (except for the Mew cashgrab and the imposibility to evolve Meltan at the Switch games).
